Heat Hog 4,000 BTU Trouble Shooting

Troubleshooting tips for the HH-04SLN-A and HH-04SLN-MA

I Do Not Have Spark – Pilot Will Not Light

  • Push the ON button on the side of the heater, you should hear a snapping noise. Push in the ON and hold it for 10 seconds prior to trying the ignition again. This allows the gas supply to reach the pilot and purge any air in the line. Repeat as necessary.

Pilot Will Not Stay Lit

  • Inspect thermocouple and make sure the tip is in the pilot flame.
  • If conditions are windy, turn the front of heater away from the wind, or place in a protected area, until the thermocouple is hot and the main burner of the heater is lit.
  • Clean pilot, see Maintenance section of Owners’ Manual.

Can I use a 20lb Tank?

  • No, the Heat Hog 4,000 BTU heater can only be used with a disposable 1lbs cylinder.

Can I Use this Indoors

Yes, but proper ventilation is required for safe usage in non-residential spaces*. The heater uses air (oxygen) from the area in which the heater is used. Adequate combustion and ventilation air must be provided. The Heat Hog does have a safety Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) to keep you safe but you must follow the instructions as outlined in the Heat Hog owners’ manual.

* The Heat Hog can be used for emergency home heat but should not exceed 5,000 BTU/Hr when located in a bathroom and not exceed 10,000 BTU/Hr (2,931 W) when located in a bedroom.

In Massachusetts and Canada, this type of heater is prohibited from use indoors according, to law.

Can this run on something other than Propane?

This heater is shipped from the factory for use with propane (LP) gas only. Do not convert to any other gas.

My 1lb Cylinder Doesn’t Fit Well in the Base

Some disposable 1lb cylinders with a plastic bottom are a bit out of spec and are difficult to fit into the Heat Hog base. Heat Hog recommends using 1lb cylinders that have a metal bottom, they always fit perfectly.

With the Heat Hog heater removed from the 1lb cylinder, try applying more pressure to the cylinder by pushing straight down. Never push down with the heater on the cylinder.
