Heat Hog 18,000 BTU Trouble Shooting

Troubleshooting tips for the HH-18SLN-A and HH-18SLN-MA

I Do Not Have Spark

  • Be sure 1 AAA battery is fresh and installed correctly. To check or replace the battery, unscrew the ignition button and place a fresh battery positive (+) side up.
  • Make sure black ignitor wire is attached to the electronic ignitor and at the ODS (Oxygen Depletion Sensor).
  • Replace igniter wire.
  • Replace electronic ignitor, part number EL-00063.

I have Spark - Pilot Will Not Light

  • Be sure you have plenty of propane in your disposable 1lb cylinder.
  • Be sure you have plenty of propane in your refillable 20lb tank.
  • If using a refillable 20lb tank, make sure the valve is in the ON position.
  • If using a refillable 20lb tank, turn the valve off and turn the Heat Hog knob to OFF. Wait 2 minutes and try again. The tank has a check-valve that may need to reset.
  • If using a refillable 20lb tank, make sure there are no kinks in the auxiliary hose.
  • When the knob is in the ◊/PILOT position, push down and hold the knob for 10 seconds prior to pressing the ignition button. This allows the gas supply to reach the pilot and purge any air in the line.
  • While moving knob from the OFF to the ◊/PILOT position, be sure to push down to allow gas to flow to the pilot. Repeat as necessary.
  • Always check for leaks where propane connects to the heater.

Pilot Will Not Stay Lit

  • Be sure you have plenty of propane in your disposable 1lb cylinder.
  • Be sure you have plenty of propane in your refillable 20lb tank.
  • Be sure heater base is fairly level.
  • Be sure there is adequate fresh air ventilation. If used in a structure, allow fresh air in and try again after a couple of minutes.
  • When the knob is in the ◊/PILOT position, push down and hold the knob for 10 seconds prior to ignition to allow the gas supply to reach the pilot and purge any air in the line.
  • Once pilot is lit, continue to hold down the control knob for 30 seconds to allow the thermocouple to heat up.
  • Inspect thermocouple and make sure the tip is in the pilot flame.
  • If conditions are windy, turn the front of heater away from the wind, or place in a protected area, until the thermocouple is hot before turning the knob to ignite the main burner.
  • Clean pilot, see Maintenance section of Owners’ Manual.
  • Always check for leaks where propane connects to the heater.

Can I use a 20lb Tank?

  • Yes, the Heat Hog 18,000 BTU heater can be used with a refillable 20lb tank. Use Heat Hog part number GC-00671 or GC-00670 which will work with the quick connect port on the heater.

Can I Use this Indoors

Yes, but proper ventilation is required for safe usage in non-residential spaces*. The heater uses air (oxygen) from the area in which the heater is used. Adequate combustion and ventilation air must be provided. The Heat Hog does have a safety Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) to keep you safe but you must follow the instructions as outlined in the Heat Hog owners’ manual.

* The Heat Hog can be used for emergency home heat but should not exceed 5,000 BTU/Hr when located in a bathroom and not exceed 10,000 BTU/Hr (2,931 W) when located in a bedroom.

In Massachusetts and Canada, this type of heater is prohibited from use indoors according, to law.

Can this run on something other than Propane?

This heater is shipped from the factory for use with propane (LP) gas only. Do not convert to any other gas.
